Engineering Manager
Role Description
The Engineering Manager is a key leadership role in the software engineering domain, responsible for defining and executing the technical strategy, roadmaps, and related decisions. They play a crucial role in driving the success of the organization by overseeing the technical aspects of product initiatives, ensuring efficient and effective delivery, and fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment.
Responsibilities
- Define and execute the technical strategy, roadmaps, and related decisions for the engineering teams.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members, ensuring their professional growth and development.
- Manage the technical career paths, technical skills, and structure of the engineering teams.
- Make data-driven decisions regarding engineering performance and capabilities.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement within the engineering team.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product managers, designers, and stakeholders, to align on technical requirements and deliverables.
- Identify and mitigate risks and issues that may impact product delivery or team performance.
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends and best practices in software engineering, and apply them to drive innovation and improve team performance.
- Work with the engineering team, product owners, and stakeholders to define key metrics related to code quality and delivery. These metrics could include code coverage, code complexity, defect density, build and deployment frequency, lead time for changes, cycle time, and customer satisfaction metrics.
- Establish baseline metrics to understand the current state of code quality and delivery performance. Set achievable targets for improvement based on industry benchmarks, organizational goals, and feedback from stakeholders. Regularly monitor progress towards these targets and adjust strategies as needed.
- Implement metrics to track the performance of individual team members and product teams. This could include metrics related to code contributions, code review effectiveness, sprint velocity, and adherence to coding standards and best practices. Provide regular feedback to team members based on these metrics to drive continuous improvement.
- Foster a culture of accountability and transparency by making code quality and delivery metrics visible to all team members. Display dashboards and reports in shared spaces or virtual collaboration platforms to encourage awareness and discussion around performance metrics. Encourage team members to take ownership of their contributions and strive for improvement.
- Use data analytics techniques to identify patterns and trends in code quality and delivery metrics over time. Look for correlations between different metrics and external factors such as project complexity, team dynamics, and changes in technology stack. Use these insights to make data-driven decisions and prioritize improvement efforts.
- Assess the skills, expertise, and capacity of the existing engineering team(s) to determine their ability to deliver on the technical requirements identified. Identify any skill gaps or resource constraints that may need to be addressed.
- Based on the technical requirements and the capabilities of the engineering team, propose appropriate team structures that can effectively support the product roadmap. This may involve forming cross-functional teams with a mix of skills and expertise relevant to the product requirements.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Proven experience in software engineering, with a strong understanding of software development methodologies and practices.
